In geriatric cat populations (ages 12 years and above), the reverse is true in that average energy requirements increase while the prevalence of obesity greatly decreases. A limitation of cross-sectional studies is that they do not follow changes in individual cats over time.

1 Σεπ 2014 · A recent study found a high prevalence of overweight (BCS >5/9) in purebred cats at a cat show. Certain breeds (eg, British shorthair, Maine coon and Norwegian forest cat) had significantly higher BCS than other breeds (eg, Cornish rex, Abyssinian and sphynx).
The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) consider cats over 10 years of age to be senior; however, based on other factors, including breed or genetic conditions, some cats may be considered senior at 8 years or less.
At enrolment, owners frequently reported physical changes (53%), behavioral changes (47%), changes to eating patterns (41%), and activity changes (40%) in their mature cats. On physical examination, 45% cats were in overweight condition and 12% were obese.
18 Φεβ 2021 · Mature adult and senior cats have changing dietary needs, and it is extremely important to provide guidance on daily feeding amounts. DER for mature adult cats (aged 7–10 years) may be equivalent to RER, although adjustments should be made based on the needs of the individual patient.
