Sequence and series are the basic topics in Arithmetic. An itemized collection of elements in which repetitions of any sort are allowed is known as a sequence, whereas a series is the sum of all elements. An arithmetic progression is one of the common examples of sequence and series.
Series. A series 6 is the sum of the terms of a sequence. The sum of the terms of an infinite sequence results in an infinite series 7, denoted \(S_{∞}\). The sum of the first \(n\) terms in a sequence is called a partial sum 8, denoted \(S_{n}\). For example, given the sequence of positive odd integers \(1, 3, 5,…\) we can write:
Series are simply defined by the sum of a sequence. A series is the sum of a sequence of terms, written as follows: (2.1) ¶ \ [\sum_ {i=m}^n u_i = u_1 + u_2 + \ldots + u_n \,\] where \ (m \le n\), and usually \ (m=1\). We can replace the upper value \ (n\) with \ (\infty\) for an infinite series.
An explicit formula for this arithmetic sequence is given by an = a + (n −1)b, n ∈ N, a recursive formula is given by a1 = a and an = an−1 + b for n > 1. Here are some examples of arithmetic sequences, see if you can determine a and b in each case: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ... 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, ...
In series, the order of the elements is not necessary, the pattern of the numbers is not important, and the order of appearance is not important. Example of sequence: Harmonic sequence: 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6... . Example of series: Fourier series: f(x) = 4h/π ( sin(x) + sin(3x)/3 + sin(5x)/5 + ... ) What are Arithmetic Sequence and Series?
