13 Μαΐ 2001 · Verse 13, “I write these things to you, who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.” God intends His children to have a sure and certain assurance of their salvation.
The way in which we persevere in faith and thereby maintain assurance of salvation is by taking seriously the glorious promises and the terrible threats found in Scripture (cf. Hebrews 10:19-31; also Deuteronomy 28).

But the main theme to see here is David’s assurance — which shows up twice, in the first part and the second part. We see this in the refrain of verses 3–4 and then in verses 9–11. And I want you to see this.
Proper Christian living should never be the fundamental grounds for assurance of salvation. Rather, assurance of salvation which should rest in the merit and sufficiency of the Savior and the believer’s new life in Christ, must be the fundamental basis for proper Christian living.
