Fractures of the sesamoid bones of the pollex, are treated with immobilization of the thumb for a short period, and this results to a quick recovery of the injury 4, 5. Only two cases are reported in the literature in which the pain lasted for several months 6 .
An open fracture of a thumb sesamoid associated with laceration of the palmar plate in a child was treated by reapproximating the palmar plate and the fracture fragments with sutures.
Two additional closed fractures of the thumb sesamoid were treated by splinting the metacarpophalangeal joint in comfortable flexion for 2 to 3 weeks. Normal hand function was restored in all the three patients.
1 Ιουλ 2007 · Results. Follow up of the patient six weeks and six months after the injury, demonstrated a total recovery of the function of the pollex and callousness of the fracture, respectively. Conclusion. Fracture of sesamoid bones of the thumb is a rare injury, not usually diagnosed, but it has good prognosis when treated properly. Free full text.

1 Φεβ 2013 · We report a series of 18 patients with chronic sesamoiditis of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb treated in the period from 1997 to 2002. We describe a diagnostic clinical test (sesamoid provocation test [SPT]) and present the long-term results of the senior author's treatment algorithm.
Recovery from sesamoiditis or a sesamoid fracture depends on the severity of the problem as well as the symptoms. Recovery can take a long time, with multiple weeks or months of wearing a cast and not putting any weight on the foot.
