The Shahada (shahadah) is the Arabic term for the declaration of faith in one God (Allah) and His messenger. What does the Shahada mean? Transliteration: “ Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulu-Allah .”
‘Shahadah’, the testimony of faith, is among the five main pillars of Islam. It is this very declaration of faith that distinguishes a Muslim from a non-Muslim – without this testimony, a Muslim’s identity essentially becomes null and void. The Shahada, also known as “the testimony,” is a fundamental oath and creed in Islam, serving as one of the Five Pillars of the faith and a crucial element of the Adhan (Islamic call to prayer). As the first Pillar of Islam, the Shahada is a central doctrine that forms the foundation of a Muslim’s belief.
“Shahadah” is an Arabic word used in the Quran multiple times- 160 times to be precise- with different connotations. Shahadah basically means to bear witness to something: to present truthfully whatever is known to one through actual viewing or through insight {Imam Ragib}. One who does this is called a “Shahid” or the witness!
*Shahadah: The shahadah, “witness” or profession of faith, is repeated with every prayer: “I bear witness that there is no god but God, and Muhammad is God’s Messenger.” The belief in God’s oneness, or tauhid, and the prophethood of Muhammad is the first step of a lifelong journey as a Muslim.
