Without Shannan, there quite possibly would be no Long Island serial killer case. Her disappearance sparked the search that led to the discovery of all the other remains along Ocean Parkway. And yet the circumstances of her disappearance in Oak Beach remain mysterious.

The investigation was prompted by the search for Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old woman who disappeared in the area in May 2010 after fleeing from a client's home. Human remains were discovered by the side of Ocean Parkway in Oak Beach on December 11, 2010.
