Looks like xcarve is a refined shapeoko2, shapeoko 3 is moving forward with a bigger stiffer design. Both seem great in their own way. I'm very eager to find out how much expansion of the shapeoko 3 will cost, given its custom extrusion. The original Makerslide is a custom extrusion too.
I got a pwnCNC water-cooled spindle for my shapeoko 3 for under a thousand bucks and had it up and running in less than a half hour. It's whisper quiet (until the cutting starts but you'll get that with anything) and really easy to get up and running.
The 3 is already a bit over what I want to spend but my searches thus far make it seem like the best starter for me being pretty well reviewed. I'll be a total noob so limiting potential losses if it doesn't work out for me is a factor.

3 Ιαν 2020 · The Shapeoko 3 XXL from Carbide 3D is a large CNC router kit that is easy to assemble and use, making it the choice for us. Check out our review to find out if it could also be the choice for you.
2 Φεβ 2018 · Some reviews say it is better than the Shapeoko 3. I chose it because the support and user forum was the most helpful and there are just more guides and help around for it. I run mine with a Makita 0700 Router and have even successfuly milled aluminium.
