To placate the daimyos he has displaced, Toranaga orders Blackthorne’s ship Erasmus to be burned—the English pilot will never leave Japan. Toranaga wins the final battle against Ishido and subjects him to a long death. As the novel ends, Toranaga’s only wish is to become shogun.
At the book's end, Toranaga in soliloquy says he sank the Erasmus to form alliances with the Catholic lords, who in return agreed not to kill Blackthorne. Blackthorne’s karma , Toranaga says, is to never leave Japan, as Mariko's karma was to die for her lord, and as Toranaga's is to become shogun.
Each book ends with a significant development in Blackthorne's education or Toranaga's plan. Book One establishes the situation in Japan and ends with Blackthorne saving lives.
