A meeting called on September 26, 1872, in Masonic Hall, 115 East 13th Street, New York, for the purpose of formally organizing the first Shrine Temple in the United States. They gave the name of Mecca to this first temple. Three years later a second Shrine Temple called Damascus was established in Rochester, New York.

On September 26, 1872, in the New York City Masonic Hall, the first Shrine Shrine Center in the United States was organized. Brother McClenachan and Dr. Fleming had completed the ritual and proposed that the first Shrine Center be named Mecca.
In 1875, there were 43 Shriners in the organization. To encourage membership, the Imperial Grand Council of the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America was created at the June 6, 1876 meeting of Mecca Temple. Fleming was elected the first imperial potentate.
The order was established as an Imperial Council of Prince Hall Shriners on June 3, 1893, in Chicago, Illinois, by 13 Prince Hall Masons under the leadership of John George Jones. They met in the Apollo Hall on State Street where Palestine Temple was organized.
The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, more familiarly known as the Shriners, was established in 1871 by William Jermyn Florence, an actor from England, and Dr. Walter Millard Fleming, a surgeon.
On September 26, 1872, in the New York City Masonic Hall, the first Shriners Center in the United States was organized. Brother McClenachan and Dr. Fleming had completed the ritual and proposed that the first Shrine Center be named Mecca.
Founded as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the organization has grown and evolved over the decades. In the late 1900s to early 2000s, the fraternity was referred to as Shriners of North America, given that chapters were in the U.S. and Canada.
