A deciduous shrub with downy, slightly-ribbed branches. At Kew, where it is almost invariably cut back to the ground each winter, it sends up a dense thicket of erect, scarcely branched shoots 2 to 4 ft high, clothed from top to bottom with leaves.
Indigofera tinctoria, commonly called true indigo, is a deciduous spreading tropical shrub or subshrub of the pea family that typically grows to 2-3’ tall and as wide. As suggested by the common name, this shrub was the original source of the blue dye known as indigo.
Indigofera linnaei, known as Birdsville indigo and nine-leaved indigo, is a species of leguminous shrub in the genus Indigofera (family Fabaceae). The genus name, Indigofera, is derived from Latin and means bearing/containing indigo (a purple dye originally obtained from some Indigofera species), while linnaei derives from Linnaeus.

Himalayan indigo. A medium-sized deciduous shrub, herbaceous in colder areas and then making up to 1.2m annual growth. Leaves pinnate with 13-21 small leaflets. Flowers 12mm, rosy-purple, in racemes to 12cm in length from early summer.
