The Siberian Cranes’ migration flyway extends over several thousand kilometres taking the cranes across many invisible national borders that did not exist when their ancestors first made this epic journey.
Among the cranes, they make the longest distance migrations. Their populations, particularly those in the western range, have declined drastically in the 20th century due to hunting along their migration routes and habitat degradation.

Reintroduction. From 1991 to 2010, 139 Siberian Cranes that originated from captive-produced eggs have been released into the wild on the breeding and wintering grounds and at migration areas. Siberian Crane chicks were aroused both isolated rearing technique as well as by parents.
Under the UNEP/GEF Siberian Crane Wetlands Project, conservation actions are being taken to help assure the long-term survival of Siberian Crane habitats along Eastern Flyway in China and western Flyway in Iran, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
