Migration routes and critical sites of nine Siberian cranes (Leucogeranus leucogeranus). Source publication. Using Tracking Data to Identify Gaps in Knowledge and Conservation of the...
The species relies on a network of important wetlands along its migration route, which follows the Yana, Indigirka and Kolyma Rivers through Yakutia before continuing along the Aldan River and tributaries and south into China.
1 Αυγ 2002 · Stopover habitats in long-distance migrants such as Siberian Cranes (Leucogeranus leucogeranus) are subject to dynamic changes, both seasonally and spatially.
1 Αυγ 2002 · Percent total migration days at each stopover site for five successfully tracked Siberian cranes. Only five of the 10 cranes rested within the Momoge and Xianghai Nature Reserves in Qiqihar-Baicheng area and most of the locations were outside these two reserves ( Fig. 5 ).
The Siberian Cranes’ migration flyway extends over several thousand kilometres taking the cranes across many invisible national borders that did not exist when their ancestors first made this epic journey.
Among the cranes, they make the longest distance migrations. Their populations, particularly those in the western range, have declined drastically in the 20th century due to hunting along their migration routes and habitat degradation.
After resting in Kazakhstan, Siberian Cranes continue their migration in one of two directions: along the Central Flyway to India and along the Western Flyway through the Volga Delta along the western coast of Caspian Sea to Iran.
