10 Μαΐ 2023 · SCT offers protection against malaria, controlling parasite density and preventing progression to symptomatic malaria. However, it remains unclear whether SCT also affects transmission stages and mosquito infection parameters.
It is generally believed that its current prevalence in many tropical populations reflects selection for the carrier form (sickle cell trait [HbAS]) through a survival advantage against death from malaria.
Malaria resistance by the sickle cell trait (genotype HbAS) has served as the prime example of genetic selection for over half a century. Nevertheless, the mechanism of this resistance remains the subject of considerable debate.
4 Ιουλ 2024 · If a mutated gene with heterozygous advantage against malaria, e.g., hemoglobin S (HbS) gene, is introduced in a small tribe, the gene (allele) frequency (fgene) increases until it reaches a ...
Sickle cell trait (HbAS) patients provide some resistance for malaria over normal persons (HbAA) or their homozygous state (HbSS) due to various reasons. Keywords: Falciparum malaria, Sickle cell trait, Sickle cell disease. The Full Text of this article is available as a PDF (51.6 KB).
