The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy depend on which nerves are affected. Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are usually mild to start with and gradually get worse. Some of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy are medicines used to treat cancer. When this happens, it is called chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). The risk of CIPN depends on the type of chemotherapy and dose given, and increases with each cycle of chemotherapy.
Side effects depend on which peripheral nerves (sensory, motor, or autonomic) are affected. Damage to sensory nerves (nerves that help you feel pain, heat, cold, and pressure) can cause: tingling, numbness, or a pins-and-needles feeling in your feet and hands that may spread to your legs and arms
For people affected by cancer, the main cause of peripheral neuropathy is treatment with certain chemotherapy drugs. In these cases about 7 out of 10 people will experience some symptoms a month after treatment, while 3 out of 10 will still have symptoms six months after treatment.
