Diagnosis of Tapeworms in Dogs. You may witness your pet scooting his behind along the floor, appearing restless, or displaying other symptoms indicative of a tapeworm infestation. If you see tapeworm segments, whether dried up or moving in the feces or around the anus, bring the sample to the veterinarian.
Clinical signs. Dog scooting or dragging their hind end to relieve itchiness. Segments seen near a dog’s anus or in their bedding (about the size of a grain of rice) — these segments may be white and moving, or dried out and yellow. Diagnosis. Direct observation of the segment in stool or in the fur around a dog’s anus.

Most commonly, an owner recognizes that their dog has tapeworms through the observation of proglottids on feces or in vomit and brings this to the attention of their veterinarian. When segments of the tapeworm break off and pass into the dog’s stool, they can be seen crawling on the surface of the feces.
