13 Φεβ 2024 · Millions of U.S. workers are exposed to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in a variety of industries. Silica dust can be released in the air when working. Workers exposed to RCS can develop serious lung disease.
Silica is one of the most common hazards on a worksite, particularly in the construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, and agriculture industries. Silica dust can cause silicosis, a serious and irreversible lung disease. It can also cause lung cancer.
The purpose of the university’s Silica Dust Safety Program is to identify the hazards associated with respirable silica dust and outline the steps to take to ensure employees who work with, or around silica are not exposed to hazardous levels of silica dust.
Providing program oversight and consultation to Yale University employees regarding potential risks, exposure prevention, and training relating to potential crystalline silica dust exposures.

Follow safe work practices and use engineering controls for equipment or processes to protect workers from health risks.
