Indoor air quality should be closely monitored and maintained according to Singapore Standard SS554:2016 Code of Practice for Indoor Air Quality for Air-Conditioned Buildings.
This Code specifies indoor air quality that will be acceptable to the majority of building occupants, and will minimise the risk of adverse health effects. It also provides information, advice and guidance on measures to improve the quality of air in air-conditioned environments. This code is a revision of SS 554: 2009. The key changes include:
updated recommended measures to enhance ventilation and air quality in indoor spaces, through the proper operations and maintenance of air- conditioning and mechanical ventilation (ACMV) 1 systems.
In setting indoor air quality (IAQ) standard, this Code considers environmental factors, which include thermal, physical, chemical and biological factors. The purpose of the standard is to specify indoor air quality that will be acceptable to building occupants and to minimise the potential of adverse health effects.
NEA primarily benchmarks Singapore’s air quality against the World Health Organisation Air Quality Guidelines (WHO AQG) and strives towards achieving the WHO AQG (2005) in the long term. The air quality performance for the following index and pollutants will be detailed in the sections that follow: Pollutant Standards Index
Singapore has met the 2020 air quality targets for nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and PM2.5, but PM10 and ozone continue to be a challenge. We continue to review our air quality targets as well as policies to address local pollutant emissions.
