To equip students for learning outside of the ESL classroom, the SIOP Model provides explicit instruction and practice in learning strategies. SIOP teachers scaffold instruction as well, beginning at a level that encourages student success and providing support to move students to a higher level of understanding and accomplishment.
The SIOP® Model serves as an instructional framework for sheltered instruction that values effective, research-based, and time-honored teaching practices. Many of the coop-erative learning and other techniques you already use are appropriate to include in SIOP® lessons.

SIOP is basically a model for structuring effective grade-level lessons with your ELLs. It is research-based and was developed by Jana Echevarria, MaryEllen Vogt, and Deborah Short to help English learners in native-speaking environments to access the same curriculum as native English speaking students in the same grade.
If you have never heard of it before, SIOP integrates content and language instruction and follows 8 steps from lesson preparation to delivery to assessment and incorporates a variety of scaffolds to reach English learners at multiple levels.
