5 Αυγ 2024 · All in all, the Manabigama is a very simple design to build. It is capable of yielding wonderful ash-glazed pieces with a minimum of labor, fuel and overhead costs. And it is a fantastic wood-fired kiln for teaching without the tremendous strain of a large three-chambered kiln.
It’s time to scale up a little, and I’ve worked out plans for a kiln of around 7 cubic feet internal volume.
A SIMLPE KILN. A while back I figured out that turning green wood is a lot easier than dry wood and more fun. But I am too impatient to wait a year for the turnings to air dry. Over the past couple of decades, I built some small portable, stoneware capable, wood fired pottery kilns. These little kilns can also be adjusted to fire to Stoneware in reduction using LP gas burners, or using wood fuel.
This is a tried-and-true design for a simple LPG-fired crossdraft soda kiln of approximately 20 cubic feet displacement and approximately 16 cubic feet of stacking space, designed for two 12” by 24” silicon carbide shelves on each level.
