Understand the structure and function of smooth muscle tissue. By the end of this section, you will be able to: Understand the difference between single-unit and multi-unit smooth muscle. Describe the microanatomy of a smooth muscle cell. Explain the process of smooth muscle contraction. Explain how smooth muscle differs from skeletal muscle.
30 Οκτ 2023 · Function. Smooth musculature is found in (almost) all organ system such as hollow organs (e.g. stomach, bladder), in tubular structures (e.g. vessels, bile ducts), in sphincters, in the uterus, in the eye etc. In addition it plays an important role in the ducts of exocrine glands.
What type of muscle is striated AND under voluntary control? A) skeletal B) smooth C) cardiac Provide one example of the location of smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscles in the body. (1) Smooth muscle- (2) Cardiac muscle- (3) Skeletal muscle-
1.1.2 General structure of smooth muscle cells Smooth muscle cells are usually found in relatively organized clusters forming a functional contractile apparatus. This type of arrangement allows smooth muscle cells to form a mechanical syncytium where proper function is only achievable as a group (Kuo and Seow 2004).
4 Οκτ 2019 · Smooth muscle is composed of sheets or strands of smooth muscle cells. These cells have fibers of actin and myosin which run through the cell and are supported by a framework of other proteins. Smooth muscle contracts under certain stimuli as ATP is freed for use by the myosin.
9 Απρ 2024 · Structure of Smooth Muscle. Smooth muscle fibres are elongated and spindle-shaped cells which taper at both ends. This distinctive shape, along with the presence of a single central nucleus, helps to identify it histologically. These fibres are thousands of times shorter than skeletal muscle fibres.
Layers of smooth muscle cells line the walls of various organs and tubes, and the contractile function of smooth muscle is not under voluntary control. Contractile activity in smooth muscle is initiated by a Ca 2+ -calmodulin interaction to stimulate phosphorylation of the light chain of myosin.
