This chapter provides an overview of the treatment of somatoform and related disorders. A brief history of the disorder is provided, along with a sociocultural framework in which to conceptualize somatization. The epidemiology of somatoform disorders is discussed.

The DSM-IV acknowledges that somatoform disorders are not grouped together based on a presumed shared etiology, but rather on the need to rule out medical or substance-use–related factors. In other words, they are diagnoses by exclusion.

In somatoform disorders, physical symptoms suggest a physical disorder, but there are no demonstrable organic findings and there is strong evidence for link to psychological factors or conflicts. The term is from Greek, “soma” for body.
