September 2021 Observed Impacts Physical Systems • Global average temperature was 0.98°C (1.76 °F) higher in 2020 than in the late 1800s.15 • The warmest year on record since records began in 1880 was 2016, with 2020 ranking second.
Students will learn that global warming has caused problems such as more frequent and severe extreme weather events, heat waves, droughts, melting glaciers, and sea-level rise. Students will also learn how climate change occurs, how scientists measure climate change, and what human activities are at the root of modern climate change.
In 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that “human activities, principally through emissions of greenhouse gases, have unequivocally caused global warming, with global surface temperature reaching 1.1°C above 1850-1900 in 2011-2020.” 15
This section provides the schedule of lecture topics and instructors along with lecture notes for select sessions.
Each group of coaches will also prepare a two-slide presentation for a special course session on critically reading popular press articles about climate change, and another such presentation for the last class on the interface between climate change science and policy.
It explains how scientiûc and policy debates work, outlines the scientiûc evidence for the reality and seriousness of climate change and the basic atmospheric science that supports it, and discusses policy options and the current state of the policy debate.
