These links not only inform our understanding of language and music, but also add to a more basic understanding of our processing of complex auditory stimuli, structure, meaning, and emotion.
This experience suggests that, from the listener’s standpoint, there are two quite distinct ways of attending to sound: one that focuses on the thereness of sound, on the sound-producer; and one that focuses on the hereness of sound, on the physiological and psychological effects of sound on the listener.
