The Geography of South Asia. India’s dynamic history, then, alternated between periods when the subcontinent was partially unified by empires and periods when it was composed of a shifting mosaic of regional states. This history was also impacted by influxes of migrants and invaders.
Scholars belonging to the constructivist school of thought, in particular, dismiss geographic proximity as a critical factor and define region in nonphysical terms. They argue, countries sharing a communal identity comprise a region regardless of their location.
Oxford Handbooks. For many centuries South Asia and Southeast Asia did not constitute two distinct regions of the world but one. This one region encompassed the bulk of the landmasses, islands and maritime spaces which were affected by the seasonal monsoon winds.
