South Mountain Fire Tower. Though the curiously circular-shaped Pawtuckaway State Park looks an awful lot like a meteor crater, it is in fact a ring dike, the result of a column of hot magma rising from the Earth that has been eroded to reveal its perimeter and structure over millions of years of erosion.
Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a grill top. The equestrian campground is right next to both Saddleback Trail and Turkey Ridge Trail which are both multi-use. South Mountains State Park has an excellent website with a PDF map available online to identify trails where equestrians are allowed. Which Campsite is Best?
South Mountains State Park Campground, near Connelly Springs, North Carolina, is a fantastic spot for families and nature lovers alike. With a mix of tent and RV sites, you’ll find a comfortable place to set up camp, complete with picnic tables and fire rings for those cozy evenings under the stars.
The campsites have fire rings, privies, and shared bear lockers which is nice. Inevitably, the bear locker opens and closes multiple times because most new backpackers don’t have a system down yet. People often “find” food in the side pockets of their packs.
Fires only in fire ring. A North Carolina State fishing license (basic) and the special trout fishing license are required to fish. Licenses are not sold at the park. Please arrive a minimum of 1 hour prior to sunset to allow time to get to the camping area before dark.

1 Αυγ 2017 · 3 different routes to the South Mountain summit. Route 1: Mountain Trail to South Ridge Trail. One of the most popular South Mountain hiking routes is via Mountain Trail. This is the only trail leading to the fire tower that starts inside the main park.
