1 Αυγ 2017 · South Mountain Fire tower. There are multiple routes for hiking up to the South Mountain fire tower, three of which are highlighted below. You can find the trails mentioned in this blog and many others on the Pawtuckaway Trail Map. Below is a highlighted version of the map with my 3 suggested routes highlighted.
South Mountain Fire Tower. Though the curiously circular-shaped Pawtuckaway State Park looks an awful lot like a meteor crater, it is in fact a ring dike, the result of a column of hot magma rising from the Earth that has been eroded to reveal its perimeter and structure over millions of years of erosion.
The top of South Mountain is home to a fire lookout tower which offers incredible 360-degree views of the surrounding area. • Fee Information: Pawtuckaway State Park charges an entrance fee. Annual Passes are also available for purchase.
28 Μαΐ 2020 · Via Mountain Trail and South Ridge Trail. Approximately 6 miles round-trip. 90 dF at the trailhead, 90 dF at the summit. Winds were negligible in the trees, about 5-8 knots with gusts to about 10 knots on the fire tower. Sun with haze clipping the most distant views.
At 908 feet, South Pawtuckaway is the second highest summit in Pawtuckaway State Park and is also home to many of the State Park's best views. The summit is also home to only Fire Tower in the Park.
The final 0.6 mi ascent to the fire tower was mostly all dry trail. A few blow downs along the way that are likely from the nor'easter on Friday. The first one was just before the Mountain Trail turns right where the Round Pond Trail continues straight.
