17 Ιαν 2018 · Mount Coolidge Fire Tower and Lookout is located in Custer State Park, 3 miles south of Hwy 16A on SD 87. Watch for the gravel road turnoff for the tower on SD 87! Tips! It is only open during the daylight hours (typically 9am-5pm) during the summer. On a clear day, you can see the Badlands; 60 miles away! Drive slowly!

The stone lookout tower on Black Elk Peak in Custer State Park marks the highest point in South Dakota. The peak’s history as a fire lookout vantage point dates to 1911, though the first fire-spotting structure, a wood building, wasn’t built until 1920.
The Mount Coolidge Lookout and Fire Tower was one of the last projects completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s. Built of local stone, the tower rests atop a 6,023-foot peak on the way to Blue Bell Lodge and is still used today as a fire lookout and dispatch center.
Located within Custer State Park, Mount Coolidge is perhaps best know for the fire tower that sits upon the summit. Built in 1937-9 by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), the fire tower is still staffed from approximately mid-May to mid-October every year.
