10 Αυγ 2024 · The Southern Colonies were a region in Colonial America consisting of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. This region’s economy was primarily based on agriculture, particularly cash crops like tobacco and rice, cultivated on large plantations using slave labor.
16 Νοε 2020 · Charles Town, South Carolina was the largest port south of Philadelphia and became the gateway for all goods into the southern colonies. Savannah, Georgia, and Baltimore, Maryland were also key ports that provided access to the merchant economy.
Unlike the South, most of the agricultural exports produced in the middle colonies came from farms worked by free laborers, either the owners themselves, their children, or hired help (including, at times, the work of indentured servants, many of whom came from the Rhineland).

The economy of growing cash crops would require a labor force that would be unknown north of Maryland. Slaves and indentured servants, although present in the North, were much more important to the South. They were the backbone of the Southern economy.
The colonies developed prosperous economies based on the cultivation of cash crops, such as tobacco, [3] indigo, [4] and rice. [5] An effect of the cultivation of these crops was the presence of slavery in significantly higher proportions than in other parts of British America.
