Southern Wax Myrtle is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. The female plants give way to attractive clusters of waxy, pale blue berries in late summer, persisting through winter.
It is native to the coastal plain from southern New Jersey into the Florida Keys to eastern Texas and southeast Oklahoma down into Central America. The leathery, shiny deep green leaves range from 1.5 to 4.5 inches long by 1/3 to 2 inches wide and have the wonderful bayberry fragrance when crushed.

Myrica cerifera is a small evergreen tree or large shrub native to North and Central America and the Caribbean. Its common names include southern wax myrtle, southern bayberry, candleberry, bayberry tree, and tallow shrub. It has uses in the garden and for candlemaking, as well as a medicinal plant.
The flowers of the Waxmyrtle are fragrant but non-showy, with only the flowers on male plants (catkins to 1” long) displaying some color (a drab yellowish-green). They are apetalous. Male flowers have multiple stamens, while female flowers are a one-celled ovary. Flowers bloom in April.
