Looking for a new mixed-media activity to try with your students? Maybe it’s time to dive into cityscape art! This art lesson brings together layers of paint and paper to create a silhouette and shows students how to use shadow to add depth to their artwork.
This city scape art activity is inspired by the work of the British artist, Stephen Wiltshire. Children use famous city scenes to create their own black and white scenes, adding in splashes of colour if desired.
James Rizzi Cityscapes Art Project. The first step to drawing James Rizzi cityscapes is making a series of overlapping buildings. Now, I teach my students to make two rows of skyscrapers but some of them make a third row. It’s all good.
Objectives were: creating a layered cityscape using various collage and book papers; overlapping buildings; variety in text, color and shape; balance and harmony; perspective (smaller and higher in back, bigger and lower at bottom); and creating depth with charcoal sticks, which we smudged with our fingers.

This mixed-media project is ideal for children of all ages and can be adapted to suit different skill levels.
24 Μαρ 2022 · Younger children may not be able to cut out an actual cityscape, but they can cut strips and shapes out of black paper (great scissor practice), and glue them to their colourful backdrop to make a beautiful piece of abstract silhouette art.
30 Ιουλ 2019 · In this stunning city skyline art lesson, elementary aged students will learn the qualities and shapes of a city skyline and create one of their own. This project covers Common Core Standards for Language Arts, Math and History for grades K-2 which can be found at the end of the lesson.
