1 Ιαν 1991 · The SP-100 Program is developing a nuclear reactor power system that can enhance and/or enable future civilian and military space missions. The program is directed to develop space reactor technology to provide electrical power in the range of tens to hundreds of kilowatts.
The SP-100 program develops, validates, and demonstrates the technology for space nuclear power systems in the range of 10 to 1000 kilowatts electric for use in future military and civilian space missions.

The goal of the triagency SP-100 Program is to develop long-lived, compact, lightweight, survivable nuclear reactor space power systems for application to the power range 50 kWe to 1 MWe.
SP-100 (Space reactor Prototype [1]) was a U.S. research program for nuclear fission reactors usable as small fission power systems for spacecraft. [2] It was started in 1983 by NASA , the US Department of Energy and other agencies.
The SP-100 program resulted in a realistic design for a system that could deliver 100 kW of electric power using a reactor with 140 kilograms of uranium -235 (in uranium nitride).
