The Social Personal and Health Education Curriculum (SPHE) is for children from junior infants to sixth class. The SPHE curriculum… fosters children’s well-being, self-confidence and sense of belonging. develops children’s sense of personal responsibility for their own behaviour and actions.
However, the relevance and appropriateness of each resource needs to be considered by the SPHE teacher, since the teacher is best placed to discern which resources are suited to supporting learning in the context of their students’ unique needs, stage of development and school context. Classroom resources to support teaching the Senior Cycle SPHE curriculum (2024) are under development. These new resources will be published incrementally, beginning September 2025.
The SPHE curriculum is an enabling curriculum - its purpose is to offer a framework around which a school can build an SPHE programme at junior cycle. The introduction to the SPHE curriculum sets out the aims of SPHE and the role of an SPHE programme in the education of adolescents and in the context of a second-level school.
Through an SPHE programme that is planned and consistent throughout the school, children can develop a framework of values, attitudes, understanding and skills that will inform their decisions and actions both now and in the future. Teaching and learning within the updated SPHE curriculum is designed to be appropriate for the age and stage of development of students, whether in first year, second year or third year. This is based on research and extensive public consultation.
