30 Οκτ 2023 · Accessory nerve (ventral view) The spinal accessory nerve then leaves the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid to enter the posterior triangle of the neck. It then travels along the posterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid and then travels posteroinferiorly across the posterior triangle.
12 Οκτ 2023 · The spinal accessory nerve innervates two muscles – the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius. Sternocleidomastoid Attachments – Runs from the mastoid process of the temporal bone to the manubrium (sternal head) and the medial third of the clavicle (clavicular head).
17 Ιουλ 2023 · The accessory nerve provides motor function (movement) to two muscles essential to neck and shoulder movement, the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and the trapezius, as well as to the larynx (voice box) and other structures in the throat.
23 Σεπ 2023 · The accessory nerve, also known as the eleventh cranial nerve (CN XI), is a unique cranial nerve that has both cranial and spinal roots. It is primarily a motor nerve, supplying muscles involved in movements of the neck and shoulders.
17 Ιουλ 2023 · The accessory spinal nerve or XI cranial nerve is essential for neck and shoulder movement, the intrinsic musculature of the larynx, and the sensitive afferences of the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid musculature.
The sternocleidomastoid muscle tilts and rotates the head, whereas the trapezius muscle, connecting to the scapula, acts to shrug the shoulder. Traditional descriptions of the accessory nerve divide it into a spinal part and a cranial part. [1]
Course. The spinal root of the accessory nerve runs superiorly, before ascending into the skull via the foramen magnum. The nerve runs laterally to and then through the jugular foramen to exit the skull, along with the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves.
