The Social Security Regulatory Authority (SSRA) in Tanzania, was established under section 5 of the Social Security (Regulatory Authority) Act No.5 of 2008. Among other things, the Authority has powers to regulate and supervise the Tanzania Social Security Sector.

A member of the Board shall hold office for a period not exceeding three years on such terms and conditions as may be specified in the instrument of appointment and may be eligible for re-appointment for one more term.
With the coming into force of the Social Security Regulatory Authority Act in 2008 (“the SSRA Act”), there was introduced liberalization of social security schemes and since 2012 employees were at liberty to choose which scheme they preferred. That was a milestone achievement by SSRA.
