Our History. The site of the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis, King of France, has been the center of worship for the Catholic faithful in New Orleans and a major civic gathering place since the founding of our city in 1718. The first permanent church, built in 1727, was burned in the fire of 1788.
Truly, this is the heart of old New Orleans. The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis King of France is the oldest Catholic Cathedral Faith Community in America.
