12 Οκτ 2024 · OSHA: The Occupational Safe and Health Administration requires stair rails to be 42 inches in height. Building codes vary between private residential and commercial properties and different localities. Generally, a railing may not be required on one or two steps in residences.
As for the stair railing height they can be placed within 34 to 38 inches and shall be provided on at least one side of a flight of stairs having four for more risers. If they are placed up against a wall they should have a clearance from the wall not less than 1-½ inches .
The International Residential Code stipulates standard balcony heights. In commercial settings, balcony railings must extend up to 42” above the deck. In a residential setting, the balcony railing must be at least 36” high from the deck level.

Hand-railing heights are given: U.S. handrails for stairs with one side against a wall: 30-38" U.S. handrails at open stairs: 34-38" above the stairs; Canadian stair handrails: 32-36" above the stairs; Wall clearance: Handrails along a wall must have at least 1.5" of clearance between the inside surface of the rail and the wall surface.
