Behavior that fulfills these norms is called conformity, and most of the time, roles and norms are powerful ways of understanding and predicting what people will do.

Social norms inherently require a reference group, indicating the ‘others’ whose opinions, behaviours and expectations we consider when choosing whether or not to engage in a normative behaviour. Group norms are the expectations and behaviors associated with a social group, such as a nationality, an organization, or a sports team. Group norms can emerge during group interaction as group members are exposed to the opinions, or observe the actions, of fellow group members.
