Explain the characteristics of Staphylococcus bacteria? Catalase and coagulase positive; gram positive cocci in grape-like clusters. What are the three most important staphylococci that cause clinical infections in humans? Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus.
Staphylococcus. -Gm (+) cocci in pairs, chains, or "grape-like" structures. -Grow best aerobically (healthy tissue) but can grow anaerobically (pus forming) as well. -Can survive drying conditions for weeks (important for transmission).
Structure. Staphylococci are Gram-positive cocci about 0.5 – 1.0 μm in diameter. They grow in clusters, pairs and occasionally in short chains. The clusters arise because staphylococci divide in two planes. The configuration of the cocci helps to distinguish micrococci and staphylococci from streptococci, which usually grow in chains.
Members of the genus Staphylococcus still represent a topic of great relevance due to the numerous types of infections they cause in humans and animals. Staphylococci have emerged as important pathogens for both nosocomial and community-acquired infections in people.
