I have the alpha version of it available here as a free to play io style game. It is currently a work in progress, but it is completely serviceable and I am rolling out new stuff on it daily. It isn't identical, I have slightly improved the control scheme, (allowing weapon to be fired without switching to them using ctrl+number for example).

Your target will struggle to bring his weapons to bear on you; meanwhile you can get in several free shots. Besides being the new player's ship, Starfighters are sometimes used by very experienced Starfighter players to make a point in one-on-one Multiplayer battles.
Unfortunately, no. Starfighter is a multi-player game, and as such it will not let you pause, even when you're in a single player sector. The only ways to pause the game are to dock at a space station, or get killed. If you get killed, you will be asked to press the space bar to respawn.
