Hermes and the Infant Dionysus, also known as the Hermes of Praxiteles or the Hermes of Olympia is an ancient Greek sculpture of Hermes and the infant Dionysus discovered in 1877 in the ruins of the Temple of Hera, Olympia, in Greece.
Work of the famous sculptor Praxiteles, the statue of Hermes of Olympia is considered one of the most important and most famous sculptures of the late classical era. It was found inside the temple of Hera almost intact, during the excavations of 1877.
18 Ιουλ 2022 · The statue is a work of the renowned Athenian sculptor Praxiteles who achieved to convert a large piece of Parian marble into a masterpiece of harmony and eurhythmy. Hermes, Zeus’ son and one of the Olympian gods, is holding the infant Dionysos in his left arm.
The statue of Hermes carrying the infant god Dionysus measures 2.10m, 3.70 m with the base. One of the best known exhibits is the Statue of Nike (or Nike of Paeonius ) which is featured on the medals awarded during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
The famous statue of Hermes by Praxiteles was found here. Next to the Heraeon is the Metroon and the pedestals for the statues of Zeus, which were called Zanes and were paid for with the fines imposed on the athletes who violated the regulations of the contests.
The principal pieces in the museum are Hermes and the Infant Dionysus (attributed to Praxiteles), some objects from the Temple of Zeus, the Nike of Paionios, as well as an oenochoe that belonged to Phidias. The extent of its bronze collection makes it one of the most important in the world.
