The Big South Fork Scenic Railway is a heritage railroad in Stearns, Kentucky. The route runs for 16 miles (26 km) through lush countryside in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. There is a stop in the historic coal mining town of Blue Heron, Kentucky which can be toured.
Essentially you are paying for a narrated 30 min very slow train ride to an abandoned coal mining town (Barthell), and a 20 minute train ride back to Stearns. There is a 2-hour stopover so you can visit the town’s church, staged general store (nothing you can purchase though), period barbershop, and drs office.
