The United States is the world’s largest steel importer (2019 ranking). In 2019, the U.S. imported 26.3 million metric tons of steel, a 15 percent decrease from 30.8 million metric tons in 2018.
Final Census Bureau data for December 2021 showed total steel imports at 2,885,000 NT, including 2,255,000 NT of finished steel (down 0.7% and 4.0%, respectively, vs. November revised data). Finished steel import market share was 24% in December and 21% for full year 2021.

From May 2021 to June 2021, U.S. imports of steel mill products increased 16.1% from 2.3 million metric tons to 2.7 million metric tons. June 2021 steel imports were up 109.9% from one year ago and increased 59.8% from the 2020 average monthly volume of 1.7 million metric tons.
The U.S. imported 7.5 million metric tons of flat carbon and alloy products in 2020, accounting for 37.4% of total steel mill imports (the largest category). This was followed by semi-finished carbon and alloy products at 5.1 million metric tons or 25.7% of total imports.
