The United States is the world’s largest steel importer (2019 ranking). In 2019, the U.S. imported 26.3 million metric tons of steel, a 15 percent decrease from 30.8 million metric tons in 2018.
Finished steel import market share was 24% in December and 21% for full year 2021. Key steel products with a significant increase in 2021 vs. 2020 were hot rolled sheets (up 89%), plates in coils (up 75%), sheets and strip all other metallic coatings (up 69%), oil country goods (up 67%) and wire rods (up 62%).
