This is a promise that believers will never get into the Tribulation. But how? Paul describes this for us 1 Thessalonians 4:13f. We can chart it like this: Some have tried to argue that this construction means just the opposite of the above interpretation.
“Philadelphus” is similar to the Greek word philadelphia, meaning “brotherly love,” which occurs seven times in the Bible (Rom 12:10; 1Th 4:9; Heb 13:1; 1Pe 1:22; 2Pe 1:7 [twice]; Rev 3:7). Christian testimony continues in the city in this present century.
As mentioned above, Philadelphia is mentioned by name only twice in the Bible, both in Revelation. However, in (Rev 3:7-13), we can see Jesus speaking about this church. He says they: “have an open door, and no one can shut it” (likely either for evangelism, or to gain entrance into God’s Kingdom)
The Church of Philadelphia was one of only two that received no criticism from Jesus. What was their secret? Learn importnat principles for being fiathful.
Tiberius Caesar helped Philadelphia to recover from the earthquake, and out of gratitude the city changed its name to Neocaesarea (New Caesar), and for awhile it bore that name. I mention these facts because they have a bearing on the promises to the church in this letter, as we will see.
