22 Σεπ 2022 · Otosclerosis affects the tiny stirrup bones in the middle ear. It causes gradual hearing loss and usually affects both ears, though sometimes only one.
Otosclerosis is most often caused when one of the bones in the middle ear, the stapes, becomes stuck in place. When this bone is unable to vibrate, sound is unable to travel through the ear and hearing becomes impaired (see illustration).
Otosclerosis can happen when abnormal bone growth in your middle or inner ear interferes with sound’s ability to travel. This can lead to mild, moderate or severe hearing loss. Treatments include hearing aids, cochlear implants or stapedectomy (a type of surgery).
