This spot south of Main Street would be referred to as Little Manila, an area where Filipino Americans could feel safe—especially since everything north of Main Street was deemed “unsafe for people of color.”
2002 - The Little Manila Foundation successfully urges the City of Stockton to designate the Little Manila area as an historic site. 2003 - The City of Stockton designates the Gleason Park Commercial Area ( an 8 square block area) a redevelopment zone.
This area represented a bit of Stockton's diverse culture (and history) back in its heydey (20's, 30's, 40's 50's, 60's, 70's and even before) when many Asian and Filipino settled into this area. During this time, this part of Stockton was bustling; full of culture and activity.
