Glacial drift refers to the method of locating potentially economic mineralization by tracing the source of mineralized material that was carried by a glacier and deposited in a moraine when the glacier melted.
Stratified drift refers to sediment that has been deposited by glacial meltwater in distinct layers or strata. This type of deposit often contains a mix of materials, including sand, gravel, and silt, which are sorted by the flow of the water as it transports the sediment away from the glacier.
In geology, drift is a name for all sediment (clay, silt, sand, gravel, boulders) transported by a glacier and deposited directly by or from the ice, or by glacial meltwater.
Two types of drift are Till (unsorted, unstratified debris deposited directly from ice) and Stratified Drift (sorted and stratified debris deposited from glacial meltwater). Moraines: landforms composed mostly of till that form on or within a glacier, or a re left behind when the glacier melts.
Typically, it is a mixture of rock fragments and boulders in a fine-grained sandy or muddy matrix (non-stratified drift). The exact composition of any particular till, however, depends on the materials available to the glacier at the time of deposition.
