The stratosphere temperature forecast charts are updated every 6 hours. These are generated using the high resolution GFS deterministic forecasting model. The stratosphere is the second major layer of Earth's atmosphere, just above the troposphere, and below the mesosphere.
Stratospheric temperature and zonal wind forecasts from the GFS and GEFS models - updated 4 times each day
Stratosphere (∼12 to ∼51 km, or ∼7 to ∼32 mi): on the contrary, in this layer, temperature increases by 1 to 2.8 °C per km, or 2.9 to 8.1 °F per mi. UV absorption by the ozone layer produces this heating effect.

The NCEP Global Forecast System model (GFS, formally the AVN) stratospheric temperature, height, and total ozone analyses and forecasts are generated each day from the 00Z cycle at the levels: 70, 50, 30, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 hPa (approximately 18-45 km).
The stratosphere starts at an altitude of ~6 miles (10km) and extends up to ~30 miles (50km). It is so named because the stratified layers within it have a temperature profile that increases with altitude.
