David Guzik commentary on Revelation 3 continues the letters Jesus wrote to the seven churches: Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.
Benson Commentary. Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary. Barnes' Notes on the Bible. Strengthen the things which remain - The true piety that still lives and lingers among you. Whatever there was of religion among them, it was of importance to strengthen it, that the love of the Saviour might not become wholly extinct.
Pulpit Commentary. Revelation 3:1. And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Verses 1-6. - The epistle to the Church at Sardis. This Church is one of the two which receives unmixed reproof.
In response to this hardship, Jesus reassures them that His return will happen suddenly, and they will be rewarded for their faith (Revelation 3:7–13). Laodicea has the unfortunate distinction of being the only church which receives no positive commentary, whatsoever.
The early church fathers—including Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Hippolytus—uniformly identified this John as the apostle of the same name, the one who abandoned his father’s fishing nets to follow Jesus (Matthew 4:21-22). It is clear from the Gospels that the apostle John was very close to Jesus.
See commentary on μετανοια [metanoia] at Revelation 2:5. Revelation 3:20. I stand at the door and knock. I stand is ἕστηκα [hestēka], perfect tense: I have stood. Knock is κρούω [krouō], present tense: I am knocking. He has been standing for a period of time and is still awaiting their response to his continual knocking.
