1 Φεβ 2023 · Root hairs are tiny, unicellular, hairlike outgrowth present on the outer surface of plant roots. They extend from the outer layer of a plant cell called the epidermis. Root hairs are continually being sloughed off by the soil and regrown. The primary function of root hair is to absorb water and nutrients from the soil.

Each strand of hair consists of a shaft (the visible part above the skin) and a root (embedded within the follicle). Hair serves various roles, including protection, sensory input, and aesthetic functions.
Root hairs are single-celled extensions of epidermis cells in the root. They grow between soil particles and absorb water and minerals from the soil. Root hairs increase the surface area to volume ratio significantly. This increases the rate of the absorption of mineral ions by active transport.
